Install protection

What it checks

Your device has a built-in guard that checks apps before they open and warns you, or stops you, when it does not trust one. On a Mac this is Gatekeeper. On Windows it is SmartScreen. XFA checks whether that guard is on.

Why it matters

The guard is on by default. It sometimes gets turned off by accident, or by software that wants to install itself quietly. With it off, unsafe apps can run on your device without a warning.

What XFA sees

Only the state of the setting, for example whether it is on or off. XFA does not see what you installed, what you tried to install, or what was blocked.

What happens if it does not pass

The XFA app shows Install protection is disabled and a Turn on install protection button. When you click it, your Mac asks for your administrator password, or Windows asks for your permission, and XFA turns the guard back on. Nothing changes unless you click the button and allow it.

If your organization turned SmartScreen off on your Windows device, XFA cannot turn it on. The XFA app tells you to ask your IT administrator.
