How to uninstall XFA

If you only want to stop sharing your device status with one organization, you don't need to uninstall XFA: disconnecting from that organization is enough. This guide covers both, starting with disconnecting.

Disconnect from an organization

Desktop (macOS / Windows / Linux)

  1. Click the XFA icon in your menu bar (macOS and Linux) or system tray (Windows).
  2. Find the organization you want to leave, and click Manage sharing next to it.
  3. Click the trash icon labeled Disconnect.
  4. XFA asks Stop sharing?. Click Stop sharing to confirm, or Cancel to keep sharing.
  5. Repeat for any other organizations you want to leave.

Mobile (iOS / Android)

  1. Open the XFA app and go to Organizations.
  2. Tap the trash icon next to the organization you want to leave.
  3. The app asks Disconnect from [organization name]?
  4. Tap Disconnect to confirm, or Cancel to keep sharing.

Uninstall the application

To remove XFA completely, first disconnect from every organization as described above. Then follow the steps for your operating system.

warning

If you uninstall without disconnecting first, your device may still appear as registered in your organization's system.

macOS

XFA can be installed in your home folder's ~/Applications folder or in /Applications, including installations deployed by your organization.

  1. Quit XFA from its menu before removing it.
  2. Open Finder and find XFA in ~/Applications or /Applications.
  3. Drag XFA to the Trash. If your organization installed it and removal is restricted, contact your IT team.
  4. In Finder, use Go, then Go to Folder, and enter ~/Library/LaunchAgents.
  5. Move XFA.plist to the Trash if it exists, then empty the Trash.
  6. Restart your Mac to stop any remaining XFA background process.

Windows

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps, then Installed apps (Apps & Features on older Windows versions).
  3. Find XFA in the list.
  4. Click Uninstall and follow the steps on screen.

Linux

For the user-directory installation, run the built-in uninstaller:

~/.local/bin/xfa uninstall

It stops XFA and removes its launcher, protocol handlers, icons, browser connection files, autostart entry and local XFA data.

If the command is unavailable in an older version, quit XFA first and remove the following files and folder. These paths assume the default user directories:

rm -f ~/.local/bin/xfa
rm -f ~/.local/share/applications/com.xfa.desktop.desktop
rm -f ~/.local/share/applications/xfa.desktop
rm -f ~/.local/share/applications/xfa-handler.desktop
rm -f ~/.local/share/applications/xfatech-handler.desktop
rm -f ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/{128x128,512x512}/apps/{com.xfa.desktop,xfa}.png
rm -f ~/.config/autostart/XFA.desktop
rm -rf ~/.config/XFA

Also remove ventures.gl.xfa.json and tech.xfa.core.json if present in your browsers' NativeMessagingHosts or native-messaging-hosts folders, including Snap browser folders. Remove only these XFA files, leaving other browser files in place.

An older version may also have left files named xfa.desktop and xfa.png in the same folders. Remove those too if they exist. If you installed XFA with a package manager (.deb, .rpm, .apk), remove it with that package manager instead, for example sudo apt remove xfa. An older system-wide copy at /usr/bin/xfa needs sudo rm /usr/bin/xfa.

On NixOS

If you installed XFA with the install command, run:

xfa uninstall

It stops XFA, removes its files and data, and removes XFA from your nix profile.

If your system configuration installs XFA:

  1. Remove XFA from environment.systemPackages (or users.users.<name>.packages) and remove the xfa flake input.
  2. Rebuild your system:
sudo nixos-rebuild switch
  1. For each person who used XFA, sign in as that person and remove the files XFA kept:
rm -rf ~/.config/XFA
rm -f ~/.config/autostart/XFA.desktop
rm -f ~/.local/share/applications/com.xfa.desktop.desktop

Mobile devices (iOS / Android)

iOS

  1. Find the XFA app on your home screen.
  2. Press and hold the app icon.
  3. Tap Remove App or the minus icon.
  4. Tap Delete App to confirm.

Android

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps or Application Manager.
  3. Tap XFA.
  4. Tap Uninstall and confirm.

You can also press and hold the XFA icon on your home screen and drag it to Uninstall.
